This Friday the Government in Charge of Venezuela stated its support for the joint statement issued by the Organization of American States (OAS) condemning Russia’s illegal, unjustified and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
The twenty-four OAS countries called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian military presence in the Eastern European country.
They also called on Russia to immediately cease its hostilities and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy for the settlement of disputes.
“The Russian military operation in Ukraine is contrary to the principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the prohibition of the threat or use of force, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, which are enshrined in the international law and in the Charter of the United Nations,” reads part of the statement.
The Venezuelan Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Gustavo Tarre, warned OAS member countries about Russian military expansion in Venezuela and Latin America.
“In Venezuela we have seen not only Russian soldiers and mercenaries from that country, but also special forces soldiers who have been involved in military training activities and in the protection and illicit trafficking of mineral reserves in the southern Orinoco basin,” said Ambassador Tarre.
Similarly, he recalled that shortly before the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry declared the intention of Putin’s government to increase the Russian military presence in Venezuela and Cuba, including the establishment of military bases.
In this regard, he denounced that this would be a flagrant violation of article 13 of Venezuela’s Constitution, which establishes that the Venezuelan geographic space is a zone of peace (…) off limits to any power or coalition of powers.
Briceño also criticized the position of Maduro’s dictatorship. “He not only supported the invasion, but accused Ukraine of wanting to militarily destroy Russia as if it were the aggressor and not the attacked.”
“We clearly declare that Maduro is not Venezuela nor does he represent the feelings of the Venezuelan people,” remarked the Venezuelan diplomat.
In addition, he confirmed that the democratic leaders of Venezuela have given full support to the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people and to all the actions that have been carried out and will be carried out, for the immediate cessation of hostilities.
The countries that supported the declaration are: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, United States, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.
